FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How often should I tune my piano?
The general recommendation is 1-2 times per year.
However, fluctuations in the humidity of the room where the piano is located can cause it to go out of tune, meaning that some pianos require more frequent attention.
Some pianos need visits every 3-4 months, while others sound good 1-2 years after a tuning. Keep in mind that a well-maintained piano is a happy one.
How long does a piano tuning take?
The average tuning should take around one and a half to two hours.
If a piano is very out of tune, it may need more time or even a follow-up visit.
What if it has been many years since my piano's last tuning?
A piano that has gone through a number of years without servicing may require some extra attention. Action parts may have loosened up, or the pitch may have dropped. Either way, a visit from your technician will get it back on it's way to sounding better and playing properly again.
What if something isn't functioning properly?
If you are having difficulties with the playability of your piano, you can request an extra hour or so to help ensure that your technician has some time to work on it beyond a basic tuning. You can also book an initial consultation in order to get an idea of what is happening.
What if someone told me my piano is untunable?
Age and environmental conditions can contribute to the deterioration of any piano, sometimes beyond repair. However, a second opinion is usually a good idea, as some repairs may still be possible.
What form of payment do you accept?
I currently accept e-transfer, cheques and cash.
I'm looking to buy a piano, but I don't know where to start.
Purchasing a piano can be intimidating, as expensive moving costs and potential repairs may mean you may be stuck with a 600 lbs problem. It is always recommended to have a tuner check out any potential used pianos to help avoid any costly mistakes. Book an initial consultation here if you're interested in a piano but unsure about purchasing just yet.
What can I do to minimize problems related to humidity?
The first step is to monitor what the humidity level is in the location of the piano. Some thermostats will tell you what the relative humidity is in your home. If not, a hygrometer can be purchased for around $30.
The ideal range in winter is between 30-45%. If the level is below 25%, the wood in your piano is at risk of shrinking too much, and cracks in the soundboard, bridge, and pin block are possible, shortening the life of your instrument.
Room humidifiers can be used, but require daily filling and maintenance. An alternative is a Dampp-Chaser piano life saver humidity control system. Although fairly expensive, these systems can go a long way in regulating the humidity in your piano, and only occasionally need refilling every week or so.
